10 Transitional Style Tips To Take You From SUmmer to FAll

1. Layer Lightweight Outerwear

When the weather starts to cool, lightweight outerwear becomes your best friend. For example, think denim jackets, light blazers, or a classic trench coat that can be layered over dresses, skirts, or trousers. These pieces keep you warm during early morning chills but can easily be taken off when the sun comes out. A cropped denim jacket over a slip skirt or a beige trench with wide-leg pants instantly gives a polished, fall ready look. Another favorite of mine for this season is a cropped trench coat. Check out my blog post on how to style them here!

2. Incorporate Richer Color Palettes

One of the easiest ways to transition into fall is by updating your color palette. Swap crisp summer whites for richer shades like taupe, chocolate brown, olive, and burgundy. These warm tones bring instant autumn vibes, even if you’re still wearing lightweight fabrics. For example, a white midi skirt paired with a chocolate brown blazer bridges summer freshness with fall depth.

3. Swap Sandals for Closed-Toe Shoes

Your footwear also sets the tone for your whole look. As the season shifts, trade in open-toe sandals for closed-toe options like ballet flats, loafers, or classic sneakers. Adidas Sambas, sleek loafers, or chic ankle boots keep you looking put-together while also offering a little extra warmth. Then, pair them with jeans, skirts, or dresses for that perfect in between season style.

4. Mix Fabrics For Seasonal Balance

Transitional outfits are all about balance. So think pairing breezier summer pieces with cozy fall textures. For example, try a white linen skirt with a cashmere sweater or a silk blouse tucked into wool trousers. Mixing fabrics like linen and knits, or silk and tweed, keeps your outfit seasonally appropriate without feeling too heavy.

5. Layer Dresses Smartly

Your summer dresses don’t have to be packed away yet. Style them for cooler weather by adding a knit sweater over the top or layering a fitted turtleneck underneath. For example, a black cotton dress with a striped sweater draped over the shoulders works for sunny afternoons and breezy evenings alike.

6. Introduce Fall Accessories Early

Accessories can instantly set the mood for the season. So, swap a raffia tote for a structured leather handbag or a slouchy suede shoulder bag. Switch straw hats for cozy baseball caps or felt fedoras. These simple swaps give your outfits a fall feel without requiring a full wardrobe change.

7. Play With Proportions

Fall is the perfect time to experiment with proportions. Pair a mini skirt with an oversized blazer, or style cropped trousers with ankle boots. These combinations work well in transitional weather and give your look a fresh, modern twist.

8. Invest in Transitional Knits

Lightweight knits are essential during the summer-to-fall shift. Short-sleeve sweaters, sweater vests, and crochet cardigans are perfect for layering without overheating. A neutral knit vest paired with a white skirt or a lightweight cardigan with tailored shorts creates a chic, versatile look.

9. Embrace Light Outer Layers in Neutral Prints

Printed outerwear is a great way to ease into fall fashion. Look for neutral patterns like houndstooth, plaid, or small checks in lightweight blazers or jackets. These pieces can be thrown over a dress, jeans, or trousers and instantly elevate your outfit while adding seasonal character.

10. Keep the Beauty and Nail Palette in Sync

Your style transition isn’t just about clothing, remember to update your beauty look to match the season. Swap summer brights for nail shades like chocolate brown, burgundy, and taupe. Switch to warm, brown toned eyeshadows and neutral lipsticks for a cohesive seasonal vibe. For more nail ideas, be sure to check out my post here to get some chic inspiration for your next manicure.
