How To Style a Maxi Dress for Fall

Whether you are dressing up or down for the upcoming holiday season, a maxi dress is a versatile option to have in your closet. Today on the blog, I’m sharing how to style a maxi dress for fall.

A maxi dress is a dress reaching the ankle. They are usually either knitted or flown which I find so comfortable. It’s such a good piece for cooler weather because it covers your legs, unlike a normal thigh-high skirt or dress.

Maxi dresses are so flattering on body type which is one of the reasons I wanted to cover this topic. I also love that if fitted it can show your curves or if you prefer not fitted, I personally love a floral flowy maxi dress.

The movement of the slow maxi dresses is perfect for family pictures or a wedding. Easily styled with combat boots as well to give you a street-style vibe.

Maxi dress outfits are mostly overlooked as we move out of summertime or resort season. They’re often thought of as the perfect warm-weather outfit, but could also be great fall outfits as well. But there are no good reasons why a maxi dress can’t be a beautiful transitional piece of clothing. We just need to know how to style a maxi dress, what shoes to wear with a maxi dress, and what to wear over a maxi dress to make some really amazing outfits.

Here are some ideas of what to wear with a maxi dress:

  • Cropped leather jacket
  • Denim jacket
  • Belted Cardigan
  • Chunky Belts
  • Flowing duster jacket
  • Tall Boots
  • Caged booties
  • Sneakers
  • Black blazer
  • Statement jewelry

This long lace maxi is also a favorite. On the left, I paired it with combat boots, and on the right a knee-high boot for a dressier look.

It can sometimes be a challenge to find the right type of shoes to wear with a maxi dress. But in my experience, maxis are really versatile and easy to style.

In the summer, you can wear flip flops, slides, flats, espadrilles, cork wedges, dressy wedges, or even stilettos or chunky heeled sandals. That seems like a pretty exhaustive list until you think about what shoes to wear for colder weather.

For fall, you can bring out some different styles. Think suede booties, open-toe booties, caged booties, flats, menswear loafers, velvet loafers, or even a cute pair of sneakers.

In the winter, wearing a black maxi dress with boots or a closed-toed pump is the ideal solution in winter and the colder months. Stylish and comfortable, ankle or knee-length boots are ideal for pairing with your maxi dress.

I love a printed maxi dress, it’s such a statement, especially in neutral colors. This gingham plaid I wore during New York Fashion Week and it was one of my favorites!
