Earth tones are a fantastic twist on classic neutrals and perfect for anyone who prefers a less is more approach to adding color to their outfit. Earth tones take their cue from Mother Nature and are timeless, versatile, and great for adding options to your capsule wardrobe. There are endless opportunities to mix and match earth tones with other earth tones and different hues. They can also complement your skin tone and highlight your natural features.
Earth tones includes various shades of greens, grays, browns, tans, and other colors found naturally in the environment. Personally, I love how earth tones outfits give off an air of sophistication. There are countless of ways to wear earth tones, no matter the season or occasion. If you’re not sure where to start, I’m sharing tips on how to wear earth tones as well as stylish outfit ideas.
How to Wear Earth Tones
I’m a neutral girl at heart so styling earth tone colors with my basics is a natural fit. It allows me to switch up the base color with my capsule wardrobe pieces while keeping neutral color palette. With my skin color, I typically stick to earth tones like burnt orange, olive green, and shades of cream and brown. Here are some of my favorite earth tone color outfits you can wear throughout the year, from spring and summer to fall and winter.
Cream Monochrome Outfit | Lace Skirt + Button Down Shirt + Sneakers
Cream is the perfect soft earth tone when you want to replace your stark white outfit. This chic casual summer outfit is a great feminine option for a casual date night or sightseeing on vacation. You can also style this under $50 skirt for summer travel with a graphic sweatshirt or over your earth toned swimsuit for a day at the pool.
Earth Tone Floral Midi Skirt + Tank
This is one of my favorite summer looks, featuring this earth tone floral skirt from Zimmermann. Pair it with a summer sandal and feminine tank for a cohesive look.
Brown Matching Blazer + Short Set
This Express matching brown blazer and short set is one of my favorite looks for Spring. It also comes in a pale pink which is a great spring color. Burnt Orange Lace One Shoulder Blouse + Jeans Outfit

An olive green trouser is another great option that can be styled the same way as classic tan trousers or jeans.
Olive Green Striped Shirt Dress + Olive Green Trench Coat
Olive green is one of my favorite earth tone colors. It’s a soft color that complements most skin tones. If you already own a classic trench coat, an olive green trench coat is a great one to add to your assortment of basics. My olive tee is from Z Supply, my go-to brand for tshirts.
Lightweight Sweater + Faux Leather Pants + Sneaker
A creamy lightweight sweater paired with a faux leather pant is a great earth tone transitional outfit for spring and fall.
Striped Knit Sweater + Cream Slip Dress & Knit Dress
This earth toned striped sweater is the perfect lightweight sweater for fall as well as spring. It’s from Ulla Johnson, one of my favorites when searching for earth tone clothing. They also have some amazing floral print dresses that always catch my eye.
