Are you feeling a little under cared-for? Many things can get in the way of us taking care of ourselves. Self-care is important and should be not be considered a luxury, but a necessity. Because only by taking care of yourself first can you take better care of other people around you. Focusing on what makes us feel happy, calm, and gives us meaning can all be forms of self care. Also, research shows that practicing self care has significant health benefits. It can even support mental illness treatments and recovery. Taking the time to prioritize your needs each day can have a positive impact on your overall health and wellness. This is why I am excited to share a roundup of my favorite essential items that can help you practice self-care regularly.

Spending time practicing self care can improve both your physical and mental health. There are many different ways to practice self care that will make you feel good and bring you health benefits. Additionally, spending time practicing self care can improve both your physical and mental health. Some examples are: creating a morning routine with physical activity, spending time stretching on your yoga mat, or making sure you get plenty of hours of sleep a night. Sharing some of my favorite self care essentials to help reduce stress and bring you joy.

A self care journal is a great way to begin your self-care practice because it allows you to spend time writing out your monthly intentions, planning your self-care routine, or even writing positive affirmations. Also, planning your daily self care routine out in your journal will help it become more naturally implemented into your day to day life, in turn, reducing stress. Also, spending time journaling is shown to reduce anxiety and depression.

Bath Salts add that extra element of relaxation to your bath. They come in many different relaxing scents and textures. Research shows that baths can lower your blood pressure and are positive for both your emotional and physical health. There are six types of self-care: emotional, physical, social, practical, mental, and spiritual.

  • Physical Self-Care: Activities that help you feel and look healthy and happy.
  • Mental Self-Care: Activities that help you process emotions and maintain a positive outlook on life.
  • Social Self-Care: Activities that help you stay connected to friends and families.
  • Spiritual Self Care: Activities that give your life meaning and fulfillment.

Self Care Tips

Get regular exercise

Getting regular exercise not only helps improve your physical health, but it greatly affects your emotional health as well. Research shows that getting regular exercise can actually have positive effects on reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Eat healthy, regular meals.

Eating healthy, regular meals not only makes you feel good, it also has many health benefits. Eating healthy food can help lower blood pressure, and bring you joy. Cooking and preparing a healthy meal can be a fun way to practice self care and reduce stress.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is essential! Especially as the weather starts getting colder. Hydration is very important for our physical health. If we feel good physically, it helps us feel good mentally as well. Getting a reusable water bottle is a good way to practice self care and remind ourselves to stay hydrated.

Get Outside

Spending time outside in the fresh air and sunlight can help reduce stress for many reasons. The sun provides us with many natural vitamins, and getting fresh air helps us to breath deeper and feel more relaxed. One way to get outside is to take part in a physical activity, like bike riding or walking your dog.

Make sleep a priority. Get a 8 hours of rest every night.

Sleep is one of the most important things that you can prioritize in your self care routine. Sleep is our body’s time to repair and relax itself. Research shows that sleeping at least 8 hours a night can greatly improve both physical and mental health.

Try a relaxing activity. Go on a walk or meditate.

Set goals and priorities. …

Setting goals and priorities can help us to feel more organized, which can help reduce stress. Spending time outlining your goals and what is most important to you can help you to truly focus on the things that matter most, the things that ultimately bring you joy.

Practice gratitude. … 

Gratitude is essential for happiness. When we think of all of the things in life that we are grateful for, it is hard to feel negative. Adding a time to express gratitude to your care routine is a great way to bring joy to your life.

Focus on positivity

Similar to practicing gratitude, focusing on positivity is a great way to reduce stress. When we tend to think of things as the glass half full rather than half empty, it helps us to feel more excited for life. And research shows it can actually have real health benefits.

Stay connected

Staying connected to friends and family is essential, especially in a disconnected world. Nowadays, there are many different ways to communicate with others- phone calls, facetime, text. It is important that we take advantage of these to help us to stay connected to those that are important to us.

Spend time with friends and family

Making it a priority to spend time with your family and friends can greatly improve our emotional health. Even if it is just a phone call or a family dinner, spending time with those we love is essential in practicing self care.

Have a morning routine

Research shows that having a morning routine where we practice self care can actually help improve both our physical and mental health. A good example of this is waking up in the morning, going for a walk, meditating and then cooking a healthy breakfast for work. Also, making time for ourselves and prioritizing our health in the mornings can have a huge impact on our overall wellbeing.

Cook at home

Choosing to cook at home can have many benefits. One is that cooking can be relaxing and can bring joy. If we choose to cook with our family and friends, it is a great way to stay connected. Not only this, but it can have great health benefits. Also, when we know exactly what is going into our meals, it allows us to choose fresher, healthier ingredients.

Meal prep for healthier meals

Meal prepping for healthier meals will not only help you to feel organized, your body will feel better after eating a healthier, balanced meal every day. Rather than spending money and eating out daily, meal prepping healthy food helps us to prioritize our health. Also, it can bring us joy to know that we are doing something positive for our health.

Read a book

Reading a book is a great way to prioritize our emotional and mental health. It not only helps to keep our minds sharp, but it provides us with a relaxing escape away from the stresses of the world. Reading your favorite book is a great thing to add to your self care routine.

Listen to a podcast

There are so many different podcasts to choose from. There is one out there for everyone. And podcasts are not only entertaining, they can be educational as well. Like reading a book, listening to a podcast is a great way to escape from the stresses of the world and bring joy to your life.

Stay socially connected

Spending time with others is essential for our health. Prioritizing staying connected to others is not selfish, but is truly a great way to reduce stress and bring joy to our lives. Having a community is a very important part of enriching our emotional and mental health.

Know when to ask for help

Asking for help should never be looked at as a negative thing. There are times in all of our lives’ when we could use a helping hand. And not being afraid to ask for help shows bravery and courage. Additionally, sometimes others can help us when we are feeling down, and one day we will be able to return the favor.

Learn to say no

There is nothing wrong with setting boundaries. Boundaries can actually be a very important part of self care. Saying no is about learning to prioritize your well being, and there nothing selfish about self care. Because you can’t give others your best if you aren’t even giving yourself your best!

Take a self care trip

Planning a vacation is a great way to help improve your well being. Going on a trip that is focused on practicing self care can be a great way to reduce stress. Bring your yoga mat to the beach and practice some stretching, or plan a couples massage at the spa. Either way, you are sure to feel more relaxed after your self care trip!

Get organized

Getting organized can help reduce stress in many different ways. This can come in the form of decluttering your space, writing down for calendar for the year or writing out your goals.

Journal

Journaling is a positive way to reduce stress. Research shows journaling can help improve emotional health. Getting your thoughts and feelings down on paper can be a positive way to process them while allowing yourself to release them as well.
